Calcium for Dogs and Cats
Calcium is a naturally occuring mineral in dogs and cats, needed for strong bones and healthy teeth.
Calcium is available as a supplement from a wide variety of sources, some sources are absorbed well and safe for dogs and cats, while others can be harmful. For example, ground bone is a common low grade source of calcium used in several poor quality pet supplements. Oyster shells are also an inexpensive source of calcium, ofetn used in pet vitamins, unfortunately most of it also contains mercury which is toxic to pets and people.
On the other hand, pet vitamin products containing Calcium that is chelated (or mixed) with citrate and/or maleate might cost a little more but are well worth the extra expense. They are both safe and effective.
Read vitamin supplement labels! The correct amount of each ingredient is important, however the source from which each ingredient is obtained as well as the agent with which it is mixed (or chelated with) is vital to your pets health and well being.
